Brooke

We had an early 20's patient Brooke; from Oregon who needed a double lung transplant because of her cystic fibrosis. She had an extremely diminished lung capacity. Her caregivers were her mother and father. Her father drove a school bus for the local school district and was an excellent chef. The financial drain on them had been quite dramatic. They said that if they had not had the access of Transplant House, they are not sure what they would have done. They said that Transplant House's offerings of a completely appointed apartment (furniture, linens, cookware, etc.) not only saved them money, it allowed them to stay focused on their daughter and all the myriad of tests she had to go thru before being put on the list. Being from Oregon, obviously meant that they were not within 2 hours of the UW Medical Center. They had to move to Seattle and be near the hospital to even be considered being placed on the waiting list. The thing that most struck me about this family was how positive and up beat they were. With all their worries about their daughter's health and survival; as well as financial stresses, these people were so grateful. Brooke received her new lungs. Besides a new set of lungs, Brooke's greatest enthusiasm was the possibility that she could now go to college; like the rest of her friends were doing. She would now have the lung capacity to walk the campus, on her own and be just like everyone else.

How You Can Help

Our goal is to give transplant patients one less thing to worry about. We believe that having a place to stay helps make the transplant process a little less difficult and a little more comforting for patients and their caregivers. By donating or volunteering, you help provide many of the amenities that make a "home away from home" in Seattle for a transplant patient. Please consider support transplant patients by either donating or volunteering.
